VA Wineries Score Big in Decanter World Wine Awards

Decanter Magazine has been described by consultant editor Steven Spurrier as the engine room of the wine world. “Think of the wine business as an ocean liner: without the engines it would go nowhere.” As self-promoting as that sounds, it has been true for at least the last three decades that Decanter spots trends and highlights in the wine trade way before the news makes its way to this side of the pond.

We are excited to note that this year, no fewer than eight Virginia wineries received awards in the Decanter World Wine Awards competition.

Total number of entries were 12, 252 and 69.96% of wines won awards, compared with 62.5% in 2010. ‘The figure is creeping up,’ Spurrier said, ‘That’s not because the judges are being more forgiving but because the wines are getting better.’

The judging panel was made up of one-fifth of the world’s Masters of Wine judging the Awards, and the judges came from over 25 countries.

Congratulations to these outstanding Virginia wineries!
