Keswick Winery: Wedding Wow!

By MARY ANN DANCISIN

Keswick Vineyards, just outside Charlottesville, is the winner of our Readers Poll for Favorite Wedding Winery, and it’s certainly obvious why! In fact, Keswick also just won The WeddingWire Bride’s Choice Award ™, which recognizes the top local wedding professionals in the WeddingWire Network.

Countless girls dream of a majestic, regal wedding. What location could be more thrilling than a century-old mansion on an historic estate in the heart of Virginia wine country?

The grand old estate is fabulous. A little over a decade ago, owners Al and Cindy Schornberg acquired the 400 acre property, with its Jeffersonian Colonial seven-bedroom mansion known as Edgewood Estate, in order to realize their dream of planting vineyards. The site is rich with Colonial history, but the home itself was built in 1911 for U.S. Ambassador George Barclay Rives and more recently belonged to musician Art Garfunkle. The impressive manor house serves as the backdrop for several distinct areas to hold an unforgettable wedding ceremony.

The magic begins as you enter the gates. Rick Collier, of VA Wine In My Pocket, reports, “Keswick Vineyards is different from the vast majority of Virginia wineries: they have swans…There were two pairs: one black and one white.”

The fairytale atmosphere carries over to The Front Lawn at Edgewood Estate. This is a perfect choice for large gatherings, and has glorious views of both vineyards and mountains. Beside the East Wing of the mansion, the East Lawn with its Gazebo create an enchanting scene with tall shade trees and beautiful landscaping. This lovely venue serves well for smaller ceremonies. Couples often choose the Gazebo to showcase the wedding cake.

For intimate wedding parties, or after making use of the Front Lawn, you can take advantage of the adjacent pool area for cocktails, or the Carriage House Lawn for politely civilized games such as croquet or bocce.

June bride Lisa, who had her ceremony at Keswick Vineyards last summer, says, “Keswick Vineyards is the most fantastic place for a wedding! My guests were constantly awed by the surrounding beauty of the venue.” She continues, “I couldn’t have asked for a more perfect backdrop to my perfect day!”

Wedding photographer Korie Lynn Herold loves working with winery venues like Keswick Vineyards. She says, “Prep time involved in setting up the photos was minimal since we were using natural light and a gorgeous setting.” One wedding party had the florist float flowers in the crystalline pool, which is next to the Carriage House. “I might have been a bit obsessed with this pool and its killer reflections,” Korie reveals. “But after seeing the pool for the first time, I knew the exact set-up we wanted for the wedding party in order to achieve the photos we desired.”

The Carriage House dressing room is where a bride will make final preparations. There are three upstairs bedrooms with en suite baths which the bridal party can make use of as well. These, unfortunately, are not available for overnight stays at present.

On this special day, why not do something especially indulgent? Jacquelyn Rodriguez of Enlightened Styles, enlightenedstyles at gmail dot com, offers on-site salon services to brides and bridal parties. “The greatest thing about my travel salon is that I come to any site and bring all the equipment needed,” she says. “I will make sure that the bride feels pampered and has as little stress as I can.”

Jacquelyn generally will schedule a wedding event three months to a year in advance. “But I have done a last minute wedding as well,” she adds. She always spends time with the bride prior to the ceremony, sampling make-up and hairstyles. “I like to make sure we have everything set on the big day!”

Keswick Vineyard’s softly colored Sperry Tent, a brand known for extraordinary craftsmanship, is perfect for the reception dinner. A full kitchen onsite gives your caterer plenty of room to prepare. In order to ensure a flawless evening, Keswick will provide a list of preferred caterers. Flower arrangements may be brought in and candles are permitted in the tent, but must be in an approved container. Floating candles provided by the florist may be used in the pool for an especially enchanted look at dusk.

You’ll want to enjoy Keswick Vineyard’s outstanding wines with your meal – a pure and fruity Viognier, lush Merlot, or a romantic rosé, among others. As they do not produce a sparkling wine, your caterer can make arrangements for Champagne to be served. Amelia, a bride whose reception took place in May 2011, says, “Their wines are fantastic! We could not have picked a more perfect place!”

Outfitted with Chiavari banquet chairs and fine linen, the elegant ambience is complimented by wonderful views. There is a dance floor and Bose sound system as well. Keswick has a pre-screened list of DJs for you to select from, to ensure that he or she is thoroughly trained on the equipment. You can dance long into the night enjoying the sweet country air.

Keswick Vineyards fulfills dreams — it’s everything you could wish for. Barbara S. Lundgren is the Special Events Manager. She will help you plan and ensure that your special day is perfect. She can be reached at 434-295-1102.

Runners-up in our Winery Wedding Poll included Doukenie Winery, AmRhein’s Wine Cellars, and Ingleside Vineyards. Peter Leonard-Morgan, President and CEO of Loudoun Aviation, Inc., was a guest at a Doukenie wedding last year. He reports, “Thanks to excellent weather and good music, not to mention fabulous wines, the day will undoubtedly be one the happy couple will never forget.”

Marketing Director Beckie Spaid at AmRhein’s Wine Cellars tells us, “I’m in the midst of the second busiest time of retail year with Valentine’s for jewelry, coupled with both bridal AND prom season in formalwear. We just had a bridal show and have two more coming up starting next Saturday.” She urges you to contact Brian Burton, AmRhein’s event coordinator, as early as possible to book your event.
